SOCIAL
ECONOMIC

Background

During the Covid-19 pandemic, 90% of the residents in Tanah Merah lost their jobs and sources of income due to layoffs. The individuals who experienced layoffs often faced stress, which they sometimes expressed through violence towards other family members, particularly children. Additionally, the cost of living, including the expenses related to online learning, increased significantly, making it challenging for parents to meet their daily needs. Consequently, some community members resorted to criminal activities to earn income, and several children dropped out of school because their parents couldn't afford the fees or forced them to work..

Our Efforts

SAH is committed to implementing programs and activities that empower the community and the environment. Therefore, we have designed a social business to address the aforementioned issues, including high unemployment rates during the pandemic, prevalent violence against children, difficulties in meeting daily expenses, and the rise in criminality and the number of out-of-school children. The main objectives of our Social Business program are:

  •  Job Opportunities: creating job opportunities for individuals affected by layoffs or the pandemic. Providing chances and trust for those without formal education or identification to have a profession or job;

  • Local Waste Management Business: offering fair prices for various types of plastic waste, thus increasing income for community members; and

  • Family Economic Support: our clients are parents or guardians of children attending Sekolah Harapan. We provide socialization and education to parents/families about their responsibilities towards children and the fulfillment of their rights..
